"Brian Jones was not simply the "first Stone" -- he was the founder of the band and one of the great musical visionaries who gave birth to the rock revolution of the sixties. It was Brian Jones who recruited Jagger and Richards into the band -- two very talented guys but both very young and still wet behind the ears (Jagger was not his first choice of vocalist; Jones had wanted Paul Jones (no relation) who became vocalist of Manfred Mann). He taught Jagger and Richards everything they needed to know to become "Stones" -- musicians who could play the kind of music Brian Jones wanted to create. Along with John Lennon, who founded the Beatles, Bob Dylan, who brought the Anglo-American folk tradition into rock, and Jimi Hendrix who took anybody who listened to him to another universe, Brian Jones was one of the true Grand Masters of modern music. Brian Jones' departure from the Stones was a disaster for the band. They had one more good album after his death and from then on, they were treading water. The "Stones" continue to perform, but basically they are a tribute band -- their set list almost entirely music from the Brian Jones' era -- to the band Brian Jones created."
