Tiny graphene microchips could make your phones and laptops thousands of times faster, say scientists

Graphene strips folded in similar fashion to origami paper could be used to build microchips that are up to 100 times smaller than conventional chips, found physicists – and packing phones and laptops with those tiny chips could significantly boost the performance of our devices.

New research from the University of Sussex in the UK shows that changing the structure of nanomaterials like graphene can unlock electronic properties and effectively enable the material to act like a transistor.
Innovation

The scientists deliberately created kinks in a layer of graphene and found that the material could, as a result, be made to behave like an electronic component. Graphene, and its nano-scale dimensions, could therefore be leveraged to design the smallest microchips yet, which will be useful to build faster phones and laptops.

Bendable concrete and other CO2-infused cement mixes could dramatically cut global emissions

One of the big contributors to climate change is right beneath your feet, and transforming it could be a powerful solution for keeping greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.

Because about 80% of concrete’s carbon footprint comes from cement, researchers have been working to find substitute materials.

Apart from developing blended cements, researchers and companies are focusing on ways to use captured CO2 as an ingredient in the concrete itself, locking it away and preventing it from entering the atmosphere. CO2 can be added in the form of aggregates – or injected during mixing. Carbonation curing, also known as CO2 curing, can also be used after concrete has been cast.

These processes turn CO2 from a gas to a mineral, creating solid carbonates that may also improve the strength of concrete. That means structures may need less cement, reducing the amount of related emissions. Companies such as CarbonCure and Solidia have developed technologies to use these processes for concrete poured at construction sites and in precast concrete, such as cinder blocks and other construction materials.

Scientists manipulate magnets at the atomic scale

Fast and energy-efficient future data processing technologies are on the horizon after an international team of scientists successfully manipulated magnets at the atomic level.

To achieve this result, the researchers used the fastest and the strongest stimulus available: ultrashort laser pulse excitation. They used light to optically stimulate specific atomic vibrations of the magnet's crystal lattice which extensively disturbed and distorted the structure of the materia.

The results of this study are published in the journal Nature Materials by the international team from Lancaster, Delft, Nijmegen, Liege and Kiev

Nanowire could provide a stable, easy-to-make superconducting transistor

Superconductors—materials that conduct electricity without resistance—are remarkable. They provide a macroscopic glimpse into quantum phenomena, which are usually observable only at the atomic level. Beyond their physical peculiarity, superconductors are also useful. They're found in medical imaging, quantum computers, and cameras used with telescopes.

But superconducting devices can be finicky. Often, they're expensive to manufacture and prone to err from environmental noise. That could change, thanks to research from Karl Berggren's group in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

The researchers are developing a superconducting nanowire, which could enable more efficient superconducting electronics. The nanowire's potential benefits derive from its simplicity, says Berggren. "At the end of the day, it's just a wire."

Berggren will present a summary of the research at this month's IEEE Solid-state Circuits Conference.

Debatu sledujte online 23. února od 18.30 do 20.00. S ohledem na aktuální protiepidemická opatření bude bez účasti diváků v sále.

Přesto můžete psát své dotazy a komentáře, a to od této chvíle na e-mail
