From the time historian Carter Woodson created Negro History Week in 1926 up through today’s celebration of Black History Month, the goal has always been to recognize Black Americans’ prolific contributions that had been ignored, dismissed or diminished in textbooks and popular culture.

The point is to highlight the pivotal role we play in this country’s advancement — from science, math, politics, literature, arts and more — and convey that our influence on every aspect of society and culture has been greater than what we were taught in history classes.

The spirit of Black History Month goes beyond achievement. It is also about remembering and demonstrating that our lives and contributions are creative, industrious, transformative and joyful. Given the traumas of the last year, it’s important to call out that our experience is about more than the deaths we protest and the pain we hope to heal. Black life is so much more than that. We are not only triumphant and resilient, we deserve to be celebrated and valued. Our minds, our bodies, and our spirits are worthy of real investment.

"To, co mně vadí, je absence demokratické diskuse a výměny názorů na dlouhodobé úrovni a aktuální problémy, před kterými nestojí jen hnutí ANO, ale země, ve které žijeme," stojí v dopise.

Pilný v něm také uvádí, že už dlouho posouvá hranice, které považuje za nepřekročitelné.

„Myslím, že jsme ve válečném stavu, nepřítelem není rozdílná ideologie, ale virus,“ napsal Pilný. „Není možné ani firmu, natož stát, spravovat neustálým nepředvídatelným přeskakováním mezi mikromanagementem a řízením odborníky. Nemůžeme být obětí populistického stylu vládnutí neschopného se rozhodovat podle dlouhodobých cílů. Teď máme bohužel politiky, jejichž jediným cílem je vyhrát volby,“ tvrdí. „Nad nimi ční hradní otec, který si chce zbytek svého mandátu prostě užít,“ dodává.

Pilný byl v letech 2013 až 2017 poslancem. Byl i předsedou sněmovního hospodářského výboru. V květnu 2017 se stal ministrem financí a nahradil svého předchůdce, kterým byl Babiš.

Do dubna 2019 byl náměstkem ministryně průmyslu a obchodu. Nadále zůstává pražským zastupitelem za hnutí ANO. Vystudoval Fakultu elektrotechnickou Českého vysokého učení technického v Praze.

Začátkem 90. let zakládal českou pobočku Microsoftu, v letech 1992 až 1998 byl generálním ředitelem Microsoftu ČR.

World’s largest COVID-19 drug trial identifies second compound that cuts risk of death

The world’s largest trial of COVID-19 drugs has produced more good news: The anti-inflammatory drug tocilizumab cut the death risk of people hospitalized with the disease, reduced their need for a mechanical ventilator, and shortened time spent in the hospital, investigators of the United Kingdom’s Recovery trial announced today at a press conference.

A preprint about the data has been published on medRxiv.

"This is an incredibly significant result," says Athimalaipet Ramanan, a rheumatologist at the University of Bristol who was not involved in the study but sits on the steering committee of a tocilizumab trial in India. "This is probably only the second drug that has an impact on mortality," he says, after the steroid dexamethasone. If the data pan out, it’s "fantastic news," adds Jason Pogue, a pharmacist at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and president of the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists.

"I think this will (and I think it should) lead to more widespread use in the United States," Pogue wrote in an email.

Around 3200 B.C.E., Stone Age farmers in Wales’s Preseli Hills built a great monument: They carved columns of unspotted dolerite, or bluestone, from a nearby quarry, then thrust them upright in a great circle aligned with the Sun. Exactly what the circle meant to them remains a mystery. But new research reveals that several centuries later, their descendants took down many of the giant stones and hauled them 200 kilometers to the Salisbury Plain, where they created what is still the world’s most iconic prehistoric stone monument: Stonehenge.

The paper’s authors “make a very good argument Stonehenge is a dismantled stone circle from Wales,” says Alison Sheridan, a curator emerita at the National Museum of Scotland who was not part of the research team. “They dealt with very tricky data but came up with a brilliant hypothesis.”

Researchers had already traced Stonehenge’s slabs of bluestone to the west coast of Wales; they’d even identified some of the quarries where the stones were extracted more than 5000 years ago.

In biblical times, purple was the new black.

In the ancient Middle East, purple was a symbol of prestige: To produce dye of this "royal" color, people had to collect and smash sea snails for their juices. Priests and royalty, including Kings David and Solomon, are often described in the Bible wearing clothing dyed with these extracts. Now, archeologists have excavated the oldest example of this purple dye ever found throughout the southern Levant, dated from 1000 B.C.E., The Times of Israel reports. The dyed wool fragments were found in an ancient copper mine at the Timna Valley in southern Israel, and go back to King David’s era, researchers report this week in PLOS ONE.

Chemical analyses revealed the dye came from sea snails in the Mediterranean, more than 300 kilometers away from the site. The discovery opens a new window into the fashion trends and trade connections of the elite in the region during the early Iron Age.

Astronomers spy promising blob around our nearest neighbor star, but is it a planet?

Being careful not to claim a discovery, astronomers say they have directly imaged something close to Alpha Centauri A, a near twin of our Sun and, at 4.5 light-years away, part of the closest star system to home.

As Scientific American explains, astronomers are excited because being so close means any planets in the Alpha Centauri system are prime candidates for detailed study—once a new generation of ground-based and orbiting telescopes starts to observe the skies in the next few years. Two planets have been spied around Proxima Centauri, a red dwarf member of the system, which has focused intense interest on Alpha Centauri A and B—both sunlike—because a planet around them (like the one imagined above) would be more like home. Breakthrough Watch, a project funded by Israeli-Russian billionaire Yuri Milner, built a $3 million instrument specifically to capture the light of planets around Alpha Centauri, with an optical mask to block the glare of the stars and capturing midinfrared light because planets shine more brightly at that wavelength. Fixed to Europe’s Very Large Telescope in Chile, the detector studied the system for 10 nights early in 2019.

By the time researchers realized they’d spied something like a Neptune-size object in the planet’s habitable zone, the telescope was shuttered by the pandemic and they weren’t able to confirm it. Now that it’s operating again, the team has applied for more observing time. So, watch that space.

Should you mix and match COVID-19 vaccines?

With nine vaccines now showing they can powerfully prevent severe illness and death from COVID-19—and vaccines in short supply—researchers are mulling an issue that, even a few months ago, was only hypothetical: Should people mix and match vaccines that require two shots?

If some combinations work, they may provide needed flexibility whenever production of a vaccine falters, as often happens. And there’s even a chance that mixing doses of two different vaccines may boost the protection against COVID-19.

One mixed vaccine trial is already underway: It is examining matching a dose of the Sputnik V vaccine made by Russia’s Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology with a booster dose of a similar vaccine made by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. A second trial, examining a combination of the AstraZeneca-Oxford and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines, which mixes two different technologies, is just getting started, and others are under discussion.
